The Ayurvedic morning routine
~1.5 hrs before sunrise
Wake in the quiet hour
ब्राह्म मुहूर्त — Brahma muhurta
Ashtanga Hridayam opens its chapter on daily regimen by saying the healthy person should rise in Brahma muhurta. The hour before dawn is sattvic — the mind is least agitated, which is why it is also the traditional hour for japa and meditation. On waking
Warm water first
उषःपान — Ushahpana
A cup of warm water before anything else encourages elimination and gently wakes agni, the digestive fire. Ayurveda treats a complete morning elimination as the first sign that digestion from the previous day was clean. Before eating
Clean teeth and scrape the tongue
दन्तधावन · जिह्वानिर्लेखन — Dantadhavana, Jihva-nirlekhana
Brush, then scrape the tongue from back to front several times. The coating (ama) that gathers overnight is read in Ayurveda as a daily report on digestion — thick and white suggests you ate later or heavier than your system wanted.5–10 minutes
Oil in the mouth, oil in the nose
कवलग्रह — Kavala / gandusha
Swish sesame or coconut oil, spit it out, then place a drop of warm sesame or ghee in each nostril (nasya). Classical texts credit the practice with steadying the head, the senses and the voice.10 minutes
Self-massage with warm oil
अभ्यङ्ग — Abhyanga
Warm oil, long strokes on the limbs, circles at the joints, a minute at the scalp and soles. Sesame suits cold and dry (vata) mornings, coconut suits heat (pitta). Shower afterwards. This is the single practice most people report as the turning point of a dinacharya.20–40 minutes
Move, then breathe
व्यायाम · प्राणायाम — Vyayama, Pranayama
Exercise to about half your capacity — Ayurveda is explicit that exertion to exhaustion depletes rather than builds. Follow it with alternate-nostril breathing, then sit. Patanjali places pranayama before dharana for exactly this reason: the breath settles the mind that meditation then rests in.After bathing
Greet the day with a prayer
सन्ध्यावन्दन — Sandhyavandana
The traditional dawn observance centres on the Gayatri Mantra (Rig Veda 3.62.10). Even three repetitions with attention turn the morning from a checklist into an offering.
Midday — the meal that carries the day
12–2 pm
Make lunch the main meal
मध्याह्न भोजन — Madhyahna bhojana
Agni follows the sun and peaks at midday, so the largest, warmest, most complex meal belongs here. Eat seated, without a screen, to roughly three-quarters full — the classical instruction is two parts food, one part liquid, one part space. After eating
One hundred steps
शतपावली — Shatapavali
A slow short walk after the meal, then back to work. Ayurveda advises against both vigorous exercise and daytime sleep right after eating (with exceptions for the very young, old, or ill).
Evening — winding the system down
Sunset
Mark the turn of the day
सायं सन्ध्या — Sayam sandhya
Light a lamp, chant, or simply sit for five minutes. The junction hours (sandhi) between day and night are treated as the most fertile for practice. Before 7–8 pm
Eat light and early
लघु भोजन — Laghu bhojana
A soupy, warm, easily digested dinner three hours before bed lets agni finish its work before sleep. Late heavy eating is the most common cause of the thick morning tongue coating. Before bed
Oil the feet, then screens off
पादाभ्यङ्ग — Padabhyanga
Massage the soles with warm oil, dim the lights, and keep the last half hour analogue — journalling, a scripture passage, or nama-japa. Sleep is counted in Ayurveda as one of the three pillars of health alongside food and balanced energy.By ~10 pm
Sleep before the second wind
निद्रा — Nidra
The 10 pm–2 am window is pitta-dominant; staying up through it produces the familiar late-night alertness and an unrefreshed morning. Sleeping before it is what makes Brahma muhurta possible without strain.
Adjusting the routine to your constitution
Vata (air & space)
Warmth, oil and regularity. Same wake time daily, generous abhyanga with sesame, cooked and moist food, no skipped meals.Pitta (fire & water)
Cooling and unhurried. Coconut oil, exercise before the sun is high, no eating past hunger, and a real pause at midday.Kapha (earth & water)
Stimulation and lightness. Early rise, dry brushing before oil, brisker movement, a lighter breakfast — or none if you are not hungry.
A first week you can actually keep
- Days 1–2: warm water on waking and scrape the tongue.
- Days 3–4: add a fixed wake time and ten minutes of breath and sitting.
- Days 5–6: make lunch the largest meal, and walk afterwards.
- Day 7: add abhyanga before your shower and oil the feet at night.

Take it into practice
Pair the dawn hour with a mantra, and close the day with a written reflection.
